Just a Little Tusker History…
November 16, 2015
Welcome to the Tusker Blog site and our very first post. This is history in the making!!!
As many of you know, I worked with my husband, Edward, for many years in his insurance agency. For some time we had been trying to increase our commercial sales, but for a lot of our customers who were business owners, we just didn’t have the product they needed. So in July 2013, after a wonderful vacation, I came back to work full of energy. So energetic that when I realized we were still running into the same problem….I decided on the spot to open an independent insurance agency and sell commercial insurance.
I must confess this has been one of the most exciting and scariest things I have ever done. Having been with a captive agency for so long, I enjoyed the luxury of a large corporation with policies in place, programs in place, and procedures in place. This work experience served me well, I had been trained by a Fortune 500 company, I had 20+ years experience in a successful agency, and I wasn’t afraid of hard work. The very first thing I had to do was decide on a name for my agency. I remember sitting in my office thinking of names, writing down names, and scratching through them. I kept thinking I wanted a name that spoke to family, friends and values. I also wanted something that included the Golden Rule without saying the Golden Rule. I remember thinking how am I ever going to brand this agency.
I finally decided on the name “Tusker” because I have a natural affinity with elephants. Many of the traits that elephants display are wonderful human traits. Elephants are highly social animals that display empathetic behavior, they are intelligent as displayed in their problem solving skills, tool use skills, and elephants have great memories and communication skills as displayed when they meet an old friend from years past. Elephants love and laugh; care for their calves and for their community; work together to solve problems; they even have ceremonial greetings; and they cry and grieve for their dead.
I’ve been in business a little over 2 years and the agency has added personal lines to the product lineup. I have learned so much in the past 2 years. I want to thank my husband, Edward, my family and friends and all my customers who have supported me along the way. As well as so many others who work with the companies I represent. So many words of wisdom and kind deeds that I will never be able to repay; a perfect example of this kindness is this website. I went to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, Inc. Road show in September. There are table after table of carriers and companies that support independent agents. At each table, there is a raffle. I dropped my card into the ThinkSEM bucket and was rewarded with a call from Mary Lundblad, telling me I had won a free website design. I worked closely with Mary and Dave Dechant, Creative Director. These are two of the nicest people; they asked questions, listened and created a website that truly represents Tusker.
Please enjoy the website, enjoy the blog and keep an eye out for the Tusker face book page to be updated. Also, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any ideas for blogs or comments.
